Our Mission Statement
Promoting each participant’s learning experience by engaging the university community
in healthy lifestyles through sport, fitness, and recreational opportunities.
Notice: Failure to abide by these policies may result in sanctions including, but
not limited to, removal from facilities and revocation of membership privileges.
1. General Facility Policies
Attire & Hygiene
- For your safety and hygiene, appropriate athletic coverage is required. Attire that
covers the chest and buttocks is required in activity areas. Appropriate swim attire is
required in aquatic areas. If a Participant's attire falls outside these guidelines, our
Rec Sports Staff will provide guidance on how to reach compliance so they may
continue their activity. - To protect the safety of all Participants, open-toed shoes or sandals are not
permitted in activity spaces. - During winter weather, we ask that outdoor footwear be changed to ensure safe
walking areas and prevent damage to flooring. Please utilize designated areas to
change your shoes prior to scanning into the facility. - Personal transportation devices (bikes, skateboards, roller skates/blades, scooters)
must be parked at designated areas and are prohibited inside RSFS facilities - Participants are expected to wipe down fitness equipment after each use and
dispose of all waste in the appropriate trash or recycling containers.
Conduct & Community Standards
- All Participants are expected to treat one another with respect. Unacceptable or
irresponsible behavior—including fighting, rough play, or violence—may result in
immediate dismissal from the facility and suspension of membership. - The MSU Student Code of Conduct is enforced at all times. Infliction or threat of
bodily or emotional harm, abusive language, and sexual misconduct are strictly
prohibited. Student Rights and Responsibilities | Office of Student Support &
Accountability - Service Animals: Only service animals as defined by the Americans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) are permitted inside RSFS facilities. All other pets and emotional support
animals are prohibited. - Participants must comply with all directives provided by Rec Sports Staff. Tampering
with building property or witnessing misuse without notifying staff is viewed as
complicity and may result in financial or judicial liability. - In accordance with University regulations, unsanctioned gambling, the use of
facilities for personal financial gain (including private coaching or personal training)
and other private commercial activities (advertising) are prohibited without prior
approval from RSFS professional staff. - To maintain a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all users, the use of
personal speakers, amplified sound devices, or loud audio equipment is prohibited
within the facilities unless expressly authorized by RSFS professional staff.
Lockers
- Personal belongings must be stored in lockers. Day-use lockers must be cleared by
the end of each business day; items remaining overnight will be moved to the lost
and found.
Lost and Found
- The lost and found can be located at the equipment checkout desk of each facility.
Items found unattended or left behind by participants will be placed in the lost and
found. Valuables will be turned over to public safety.
2. Facility Access
- To maintain secure access, all Participants must present and scan a valid
MSU/Alumni ID with an active membership. Access cannot be granted without a
valid physical ID. - Participants must enter RSFS facilities through the designated main entrance.
3. Activity Spaces
Fitness Floor & Equipment
- All equipment must be returned to its designated location after use. Checked-out
items must be returned by the end of the day to avoid late or replacement fees. For
safety and floor protection, do not move free weights or equipment between floors.
Hammock Grove
- Participants are expected to bring their own hammocks for use in the grove.
- Hammocks may also be rented or checked out at the Adventure Rec Center desk.
- Participants must adhere to posted guidelines regarding hammock placement,
height, and duration of use. - Safe distances must be maintained between hammocks to ensure participant safety
and the integrity of the grove structures.
Multi-Purpose Rooms
- Multi-purpose rooms are not available for open recreation (with the exception of the
1st Floor Recovery Room) as they are reserved for Fitness and Wellness classes and
programs.
Open Recreation
- Open recreation is available in designated spaces when no reservations or
programming are occurring. Participants are not permitted to set up, move, or tear
down equipment; please request assistance from Rec Sports Staff for court
modifications. - To ensure equitable play, a Challenge System is utilized for all open recreation
competitions. Under this system, winners remain on the court or playing area until
challenged by the next team or individual in line. - For basketball specifically, challenge games are played to 15 points. Full-court
games take precedence over half-court games when Participants are waiting.
4. Aquatics
- Proper swimming attire is required (denim, thongs, sports bras, and street clothes
are prohibited). Infants must wear a swim diaper and plastic pants. - A lifeguard must be positioned in the stand before any Participant enters the water.
- Participants with infectious conditions, such as coughs, colds, sores, or open blisters,
are not permitted in the pool. - Please do not spit or blow your nose in the pool or gutters.
- Diving is prohibited in lap lanes (feet-first entry only).
- Diving Area: Swimming is prohibited in the diving well while boards are open.
Springboard (1M & 2M) use is limited to one bounce, jumping straight out from the
board. - Supervision: Children under 16 must be supervised by a parent or guardian who
remains on the pool deck at all times. - Rec Sports Staff has final authority on all safety matters.
5. Climbing Areas
- Access & Age: All climbers must have a valid MSU ID or climbing pass and a signed
waiver on file. All climbers must meet the minimum age requirement of 4 years old
and utilize properly fitting equipment. - Equipment: Personal climbing equipment is permitted but must be used within the
manufacturer’s recommendations. Use of facility equipment is recommended; Rec
Sports Staff may disallow personal climbing equipment at their discretion. - Footwear: Technical climbing shoes are required while climbing. Other closed-toe,
closed-heel shoes may be worn while belaying. - Safety & Environment: To ensure safety and clear communication, headphones and
earbuds are prohibited in the climbing space. No food or drink (other than water) is
allowed at the Climbing Wall. - Priority: Be aware of other climbers. Priority is given to climbers on the wall, followed
by adaptive climbers, lead climbers, top rope climbers, and auto belay climbers. - Maintenance: If a hold is loose, please notify staff. Do not attempt to move, tighten,
or loosen holds. Climbers should avoid excessive use of chalk and should brush
holds when finished. - Incidents: Notify a staff member immediately of any accidents or safety concerns.
- Instruction: All instruction and qualification must be performed exclusively by Rec
Sports Staff.
6. Sport Simulators
- Access is by reservation only. Rental equipment is available for use; however,
Participants are also welcome to bring their own golf clubs provided they are clean. - Equipment damaged beyond normal wear and tear is subject to possible
replacement fees. - A maximum of 4 Participants are allowed per simulator. For safety, only one person
is permitted in the hitting area at a time. Swinging, throwing, or hitting equipment
outside of the simulator is strictly prohibited. - To protect equipment, do not puncture the turf with personal tees; turf-specific tees
are provided at the Equipment Desk.
7. Fitness and Wellness Programs
Class Etiquette & Attendance
- Check-In: All Participants must scan their ID for check-in. Participants are
encouraged to arrive 10 minutes early to allow time for check in and set up. - Instructor Guidance: Participants must follow all instructor cues and safety guidance
to maintain class flow and reduce the risk of injury. - Environment: To maintain focus, conversations should be kept to a minimum during
instruction and mobile devices should be silenced. Hand towels are recommended,
and all Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a water bottle. - Personal Monitoring: Participants are responsible for monitoring their own exertion
levels; instructors will provide guidelines for monitoring intensity and ranges.
Equipment & Attire
- Footwear: Clean, dry, closed-toe/closed-heel athletic shoes are required. For matbased or reformer classes, socks are permitted.
- Mats: Facility mats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants may
bring personal mats, but no personal equipment may be stored within the facility. - Sanitization: Participants must use designated wipes to clean all equipment after
use.
Cancellation and Attendance Policy
- Cancellations: Participants are required to cancel registrations at least 12 hours prior
to the scheduled class time. - Warnings: Two cancellations made with at least 12 hours' notice within a one-month
period will result in an official warning. - No-Show Penalties: Missing three classes in a month without canceling will reduce
your pre-registration window from 48 hours to 24 hours. - Suspension: Missing more than three classes in a month without canceling will result
in a one-week block from all class pre-registration.
8. Photography and Video
- RSFS may record or edit into video and/or photographs any participant’s name,
likeness, voice, image and video images for use in Department publications,
promotional materials and website, without compensation and without prior notice - Participants may use cell phones to capture photos or videos of themselves for
personal use. Use of tripods or camera stands is prohibited. Media capture is strictly
prohibited in restrooms, locker rooms, and Aquatics areas at all times. - Pictures of minors or Spartan Swim School sessions are prohibited at all times.
- To obtain permission for professional or commercial filming, contact the department
at least 7 business days in advance.
9. Emergency & Administrative
- Emergency Action Plans (EAP): In the event of an emergency, Participants must
follow all directives given by Rec Sports Staff immediately. - Refund Policy: Refunds are generally not available for programs, rentals, or other
expenses. Exceptions may be considered at the discretion of Rec Sports
Professional Staff.
